Can we improve decision making 10X?
“Smarts won’t fix revenue or bring success. But mastering your emotions might save your next big move.”
The Big Idea 🚀
Why Smart Entrepreneurs Still Make Dumb Decisions
Even the most analytical founders sabotage their judgment when emotion takes the wheel. Here’s how to make sharper, calmer, higher-ROI decisions—starting with your state of mind.
Every founder believes they’re rational—until they aren’t.
You build dashboards, obsess over KPIs, and swear you’re “data-driven.” Then one tense meeting later, you make a hire you regret, panic-cut a marketing budget, or double down on a failing idea because it just feels right.
The problem wasn’t the data. It was your nervous system. And I got the data to prove it!
The Myth of the Rational Entrepreneur
Startup culture worships logic. The smarter the founder, the better the decisions—right? Not exactly. Behavioral science has spent decades proving that intelligence doesn’t immunize you from emotional bias.
Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio discovered that people who can’t feel emotion can’t make decisions at all. They analyze endlessly but can’t commit. Emotion isn’t a bug—it’s the operating system.
Harvard psychologist Jennifer Lerner calls emotions “potent and predictable drivers” of judgment.
Anxiety leads to caution.
Anger leads to overconfidence.
Excitement leads to blind spots.
Gallup estimates roughly 70% of decisions are emotional first, logical second. The brain rationalizes what the heart has already chosen.
Why Founders Are Especially Prone to Bad Calls
Running a startup is an emotional pressure cooker. Every decision feels existential.
Fear drives premature cost-cutting or conservative moves.
Anger fuels impulsive firings or revenge pivots.
Euphoria leads to over-expansion and dilution of focus.
A 2024 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that executives under emotional stress made worse strategic calls—even when given identical information.
Same data. Different decisions. The variable was emotional state.
The Real Competitive Edge: Emotional Regulation
Here’s the fix: emotional regulation isn’t therapy—it’s a profit skill.
A 2022 paper in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that people who could regulate their emotions made more ethical, longer-term decisions.
Research from Manchester Business School linked strong emotional control in CEOs to steadier performance and healthier culture.
Even Deloitte now advises leaders to “test their fears, hopes, and assumptions before deciding.” Emotional self-check is the new due diligence.
The 4-Step Decision Hygiene Routine
1. Name what you feel.
Label it: I’m anxious. I’m frustrated. I’m hyped. Neuroscience shows naming emotion instantly lowers its grip on the brain.
2. Don’t decide at emotional peak.
Delay big calls until your heart rate and breathing normalize. Clarity follows calm.
3. Ask: “What future does this create?”
Bad decisions are short-term painkillers. Good ones build futures. Reframe before you choose.
4. Run the Spotlight Test.
“If this decision hit TechCrunch tomorrow, would I still defend it?” That question alone kills a surprising number of dumb moves.
The Rational Takeaway
Great entrepreneurs aren’t emotionless—they’re emotionally disciplined.
They know that calm beats clever, presence beats panic, and self-awareness beats spreadsheets when the stakes are high.
Your next great decision won’t come from another data dashboard. It’ll come from the three inches between your heart and your head—once they’re finally in sync.
Because in the end, the smartest entrepreneurs aren’t the ones who know the most data. They’re the ones who know themselves.
Heart-Centered Decision Reset
When emotions hijack your judgment, logic won’t save you — physiology will. Try this quick reset to “breathe into your heart” and make decisions from calm awareness rather than emotional noise.
How to do it:
Find quiet. Step away from screens and people. Sit upright but relaxed.
Close your eyes. This shifts the brain from analysis to presence.
Slow your breathing. Inhale gently through your nose for a count of 4–5, exhale for 6–7. Repeat 3–5 cycles.
Bring your attention to your heart. Imagine each breath moving in and out through your chest. Feel it soften.
Drop your thoughts downward. Let the chatter in your head settle into your heart area, as if you’re thinking from there.
Ask quietly: “What’s the right decision here?” Then wait. Don’t force an answer. Let clarity surface on its own.
Why it works (fact): Slowing your breath and focusing on the heart activates the parasympathetic nervous system — lowering cortisol, stabilizing pulse, and restoring access to the prefrontal cortex (the part that makes rational choices). Research from the HeartMath Institute and independent biofeedback labs confirms this “coherence” improves focus and emotional balance.
Inference: You’re not removing emotion; you’re integrating it — aligning intellect with intuition. When leaders learn to think with the heart, their decisions get quieter, cleaner, and more correct.
